Supreme Court of India cause list

The cause list is the court’s running order for the day — which matters each bench will take up, and in what order. Where the Supreme Court publishes it, how to read one entry, and how to find your matter in it.

Where it is published

The Supreme Court publishes its cause lists on sci.gov.in, under Cause List. The page is a search form: pick the list type and the listing date (or a range), choose main or supplementary, and narrow it to one court, one judge or a party name. Court numbers run from Court No. 1 to 18, plus the Registrar Court. LawCentral does not host or copy the list — always open the court’s own copy before you leave for court.

Reading one entry

Every entry sits under a bench. Read it left to right: where, before whom, in what order, which case.

Sample — not a real listingPlaceholders only; each court lays its list out its own way

Court no. 3 · Hon’ble [Judge’s name] and Hon’ble [Judge’s name]

27.  SLP(C) No. 0000/2026  [Petitioner] v. [Respondent]

The room. Benches sit in numbered courts; the number can change day to day.
Bench
The bench header — a single judge or a division bench, named as “Hon’ble …”. Every entry below it is heard by them.
27.
The item number: your place in that bench’s list for the day. It tells you roughly when the bench reaches you, not a fixed time.

Case type, number and year — the number you file under and search by.

Kinds of list

The list-type menu covers the Daily Cause List, the Miscellaneous List, the Regular List, the Single Judge List, the Chamber List, the Misc. Advance List, the Advance and Final Elimination Lists and the Weekly list. Each comes as a main list with supplementary lists that can add matters — check both for your date.

Finding your matter

  1. 1

Open the list for your date and bench

On sci.gov.in → Cause List, pick the list type and date, then main or supplementary, and all courts or yours.

  2. 2

Search for your name or case number

Ctrl / ⌘ F in the list. Search the advocate name exactly as it appears in the court’s records, then the case number.

  3. 3

Note the court and item number

Both can change from the last date. Write them down before you leave.

  4. 4

Watch the item number on the day

The bench moves through the list; adjournments and passovers shift it. Confirm in court.

Questions advocates ask

Where is the Supreme Court cause list published?

On sci.gov.in, under Cause List. Choose the list type and the date, then all courts or one court, a judge or a party name.

Can I find my matters by advocate name?

The cause-list page searches by court, judge, party name and date, not by advocate name. Open the list for your date and search it (Ctrl / ⌘ F) for your name and your case number.

What does the item number tell me?

Your position in that bench’s list for the day. It is a running order, not an appointment time — a matter can be called earlier or passed over.
